Top Returning #AEHoops MBB Players

Pre-season lists are worthless-- something few will willingly admit but most acknowledge if probed.

That being said, here are your top returning players for men's basketball in the America East. Warney was a no brainer, Albany/Stony Brook fans will argue over Singletary and Puriefoy for days. I gave Singletary the nod since Puriefoy had a down year shooting the ball in 2014-15 and had a higher T/O rate.

--Nothing really matters until the players step on the court, until then enjoy arguing over hypotheticals.

  • Back to back America East POY award winner
  • 2014-15 AEast Defensive POY
  • 2014-15 AEast 1st team
  • Averaged a double-double with 17 points and 10.4 rebounds in AEast conference play
  • 1st in nation with 24 double-doubles in 35 games
  • Only player in country to lead league in points, rebounds and blocks
  • Tied AEast record with 8 America East Player of the Week awards during 2014-15 season
  • 1st in America East averaging 16.4 PPG overall
  • 1st in America East averaging 11.7 RPG overall
  • 1st in America East averaging 2.5 BPG overall
  • 1st in America East with 150 offensive rebounds
  • Finished 3rd in nation with 11.69 rebounds per game during 2014-15 season
  • Finished 7th in nation with 4.29 offensive rebounds per game

Can the reigning back to back America East POY award winner pull the Tom Emanski and go back to back to back? An easy choice for number one on this list, Jameel Warney's stats speak for themselves. He can score with his right, he can score with his left, he rebounds better than anyone and he blocks a ton of balls without fouling. Warney has the chance to finish second in rebounding in America East history while cracking the top 10 in total points. Only one question remains in his career--can he, along with his fellow Stony Brook seniors, get Stony Brook into the NCAA tournament?

  • Back to Back America East Tournament MOP award winner
  • 6th in conference at 13.7 PPG
  • Played only 24 team games including 8 America East Conference games
  • Shot 50% from the field in conference play
  • Shot 45.7% from three in conference play
  • 2014-15 AEast 2nd team

When judging Peter Hooley's ability in conference play one should start with his 2013-14 campaign rather than his 2014-15 season. Hooley is the most gifted perimeter scorer in the America East, with his ability to hit the three ball, pull up mid-range and get to the rim. The 6'4'' Australian is poised for a monster season as he seeks his fourth straight America East Tournament title and NCAA Tournament bid.

3. Evan Singletary, Sr (Albany)

  • Shot 40.5% from deep
  • 10th in conference in A/TO
  • 8th in conference at 13.0 PPG

The ability of Evan Singletary to not only adapt to America East play during the 2014-15 season but thrive, was truly something special. As a first year player Singletary led his team in minutes while playing the demanding position of point guard. He's dangerous from deep as evident by his high 3PFG% while also showing a talent for driving and getting to the rim (NSFW). Now with a year of America East play under his belt the sky is the limit for this point guard from Charm City.

Carson Puriefoy's ability to blow past his defender may very well be unmatched in the America East, something he admits he takes great pride in. While his shooting percentage from deep may have been down during the 2014-15 season, Puriefoy was still able to get to the free throw line at will-- leading the conference in free throws made. If he can improve his assist to turnover ratio, while bringing his 3P% number closer to his sophomore year total, Stony Brook has as good of a chance as any to win the America East Playoffs and reach their first NCAA Tournament.

  • 2014-15 AEast 1st team
  • Top 10 in conference in PPG, FGM, OR, and BPG
  • 2nd in conference in BPG

While only averaging just over 25 minutes per game during the 2014-15 season (due in large part to foul trouble) Ethan O'Day put up numbers good enough to put him in the top 10 in several major statistical categories. O'Day was the only Vermont player to average double digit points on the season, as at least 7 players averaged 20 minutes per game for the Catamounts. With Hector Harold having graduated, and Zach McRoberts having left the team, look for O'Day's minutes to increase as well as his overall stats.
