North Carolina vs Davidson Quickie

Run Forest, Run

It was obvious Davidson couldn't contain the UNC break as the Tar Heels recorded 26 fast break points in the contest. The Wildcats couldn't run with UNC once the Tar Heels started limiting their turnovers. Both teams like to play fast, which played into UNC's hands.

Nate Britt catches a lot of heat from Tar Heel fans; this one included, so it was nice to see him show up against Davidson. Britt finished the evening with 17 points on 6-8 shooting in just 16 minutes of action. More importantly, he didn't commit a single turnover in the contest. It was obvious as last season came to a close that Britt would be losing minutes to Joel Berry and now with the return of Marcus Paige he will have to find a way to maximize his production in limited minutes...something he did quite well against Davidson.

Carolina shot a respectable 34.8% (8-23) from the perimeter; certainly pleasant, but nothing to write home about. Davidson spent most of the game collapsing on the interior and doubling the post which led to some open UNC shots from deep. More important than the final percentage is the fact that Berry, Paige and Britt finished a combined 7-14 from distance, with Justin Jackson (1-5) being the only Tar Heel that struggled from 3.

Overall the UNC numbers from distance look pretty good so far in 15/16:

Marcus Paige: 60% (6-10)
Nate Britt: 48.1% (13-27)
Theo Pinson: 40.9% (9-22)
Joel Berry: 37.5% (15-40)
Justin Jackson: 26.7% (8-30)

There's always a lot to like in a 33 point win in which the team scores 98 points. Carolina dominated points in the paint (54-24), rebounding (52-31), and fast break points (26-9), while leading the whole way. Kennedy Meeks finished with 9 points and 10 rebounds in just 18 minutes. Brice Johnson finished with 13 points and 9 rebounds in 21 minutes. Justin Jackson struggled from deep but his mid-range/floater game was excellent. Pretty much everyone who matters played well...team shot 50.7% from the field....and...wait for it...14-17 (82.4%) FROM THE FREE THROW LINE.

UNC turned the ball over a ton early, had 9 maybe 10 in the first half...finished with 15 for the game. Brice Johnson has a beautiful mid range shot, he also rarely passes once he touches the ball on the interior...even if he is double teamed. Kennedy Meeks got caught lowering his shoulder a couple of times for offensive fouls. Justin Jackson got caught shuffling his feet when catching the ball a couple of times for travel calls.
