#AEHoops Week 3 Roundup

Vermont took care of business in a game at Richmond that they were actually paid to play in (believe around $60,000). Ernie Duncan led the way for them against the Spiders with an efficient night shooting that included a 5-8 performance from deep for a total of 21 points. The Catamounts then fought hard in their toughest road test of OOC play (non high major) in a 4 point defeat at Bucknell. Anthony Lamb led the way for UVM at Bucknell with a 20 point effort on 9-18 from the floor. Nothing to worry about here, the Catamounts fought hard in the loss and almost erased a double-digit deficit late despite being outscored by 6 points over the final 10 minutes.

Albany started slow and overcame a Colgate team that was able to hit some tough contested shots late. The Great Danes were led in scoring by Travis Charles, who tallied 17 points on 6-8 shooting in the win over Colgate. No one shot well in the first half in the Columbia/Albany matchup as the teams entered the break with Albany leading 29-26. Both teams would light it up in the second half, as Columbia shot 67.7% from the field and Albany shot 58.6%. The difference ended up being the ability of Albany's stars (Joe Cremo & David Nichols) to turn it on late offensively as the Great Danes had 41 points heading into the U12 media timeout in the second half and would score 45 points from that point on. Albany still has to figure out the defensive end, but this offense remains special.

Stony Brook did what they were supposed to do vs Shawnee State before a thrilling come from behind win against St. Francis PA. The Seawolves had a win probably of 3% as they trailed by 15 points with 8:12 left in the contest. Stony Brook was led by Akwasi Yeboah in the game as he finished with 19 points on 7-9 shooting. Tyrell Sturdivant completed the comeback with a go ahead layup as time wound down.

UMBC played Army tough, but once again the defense wasn't strong enough in the loss. The Retrievers were outscored by Army 23-12 over the first 10 minutes of the second half, a stretch that pretty much sealed their fate. Joe Sherburne led UMBC in the loss, hitting 5-8 from deep. The offense was good enough to carry UMBC to a win over The Citadel in which they scored 98 points and 58.8% from the floor. KJ Maura led them with 21 points in the win, which was impressive for the simple fact that the Retrievers were able to score 98 points with Jairus Lyles out for the second straight game with a concussion.

Binghamton pounded Delaware St. on the road out-rebounding them by 14 on their way to a 21 point victory. The Bearcats were led by JC Show who dropped 17 points on an efficient 5-8 from deep, while Thomas Bruce recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds. An 11 point victory over Colgate was the more impressive of the week for Binghamton, as Thomas Bruce dropped 26 points and pulled in 10 rebounds. Binghamton will go as Bruce goes, he needs to be more consistent not just from game to game, but from play to play. There's no reason he shouldn't dominate the interior most games, and it starts with the effort he puts into his post positioning before he receives the ball.

New Hampshire dropped a close home contest to Boston University, their sixth straight loss in a row, before bouncing back with a 16 point victory over Bryant. UNH will need more efficient offensive nights from Tanner Leissner going forward to reach their preseason expectations. There appears to be behind the scene issues here for the Wildcats that hopefully get figured out before conference play begins.

UMass Lowell dropped a home contest to Sacred Heart before finally hitting the road outside of the state of Massachusetts vs NJIT. There's no excuse for giving up 87 points to a Sacred Heart team that is ranked 327th offensively by KenPom, while the NJIT loss can be excused as it was played without an injured Jahad Thomas.

Hartford's LIU BK loss wasn't pretty as they tied it with a late three before fouling a three point shooter with less than a second left on the clock in regulation to lose. The Hawks fought hard in their home loss to Boston College as they entered the break trailing by only 1, eventually falling by 12. John Carroll led Hartford in scoring with 20 points on 9-13 shooting vs BC.

Maine lost by 21 at Georgetown before fighting hard in a road loss at Fordham. The Black Bears pushed Fordham to overtime before falling by 1 in the extra period. Aaron Calixte led Maine in scoring this past week averaging 18.5 points on 52% (11-21) shooting in the two contests.

Late Charge Pushes BC Past Hartford in Capital City's Game of the Year

The Hartford Courant seems to ignore Hartford basketball, but when you have a storied mid-major such as UConn to worry about there isn't much time for the other guys.
