UMBC returns 65.9% of their offense from a team that finished conference play with the highest points per game average (81.5). The majority of their missing offense comes from the departure of Will Darley who averaged 18.7 ppg during a breakout senior campaign. Darley also led UMBC in three point shooting as he finished America East action with a league best 50.5% and 3.3 made three pointers per game. The other key loss for the Retrievers is Rodney Elliott who averaged 8.1 ppg last season in conference, while shooting 41.7% from deep on 3.0 attempts per game.
The big news for UMBC this past offseason was the return of Jairus Lyles for his graduate year. Lyles finished second for the Retrievers during conference action with 16.9 ppg, while leading them in rebounds (6.3) and steals (2.2). Other key pieces returning for UMBC are Joe Sherburne (9.1 ppg, 4.1 rpg), K.J. Maura (8.7 ppg, 4.5 apg), and Jourdan Grant (7.5 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 2.1 apg).
While plenty of talent returns for the Retrievers they still enter the season with one major question and a couple of smaller ones. Who's going to fill the role played by Will Darley last season? Darley's ability as a stretch big gave them a mismatch against several America East teams, something that either needs to be replaced, or will be missing from their 2017-18 team.
UMBC will need to improve their defense and offensive rebounding to push into the top 3 of the America East standings this season. While they finished 6th in D-Efficiency they gave up 79.1 points per game (8th overall), which can be attributed to their league leading 15.6 seconds average possession length. The Retrievers finished 9th overall with an offensive rebounding percentage of 23.8% last season, although they did do a decent job on the defensive glass.
Expect increased production this season from Sherburne, Grant, Nolan Gerrity and Arkel Lamar (who is my sleeper for UMBC). It will be a group effort on the perimeter to make up for what was lost in Darley, who's deep shooting numbers vaulted UMBC to the top of 3FG% (39.9%) last year in conference play.
