Synopsis
Cubs head into the series with MLB's 3rd best ERA while the Mets head in with the 4th best. Post All-Star break the Mets hit 7 points higher than the Cubs. Opponent batting average was pretty equal during the second half as the Cubs staff held teams to a .232 BA while Mets pitchers held their opponents to a .248 BA.
Opponents have to be factored in and without accounting for out of division foes the Cubs (as everyone knows) faced a much harder schedule. While the NL Central was 2015's best division the NL East was 2015's worst.
So far the Cubs have defeated MLB's 1st and 2nd best pitching staffs to reach the NLCS; as they are the 3rd, taking on the Mets (4th) presents them with the opportunity to defeat opponents boasting the top MLB staff's other than their own.
Mets defeated MLB's 5th best ERA (Los Angeles Dodgers, 3.49)
Mets defeated MLB's 5th best ERA (Los Angeles Dodgers, 3.49)
Tough to judge a postseason series, especially when the teams coming in appear to be so close statistically. Cubs won 7 more games in a much tougher division so they get the edge heading in.
Regular season statistics can shed a light into the teams abilities however in a 7 game max sample size anything is possible. Postseason is more about who's hot at the right time rather than who has been more consistent throughout the season.
Game 1 - Lester vs Harvey, Mets W 4-2
Game 2 - Arrieta vs Syndergaard, Mets W 4-1
Game 3 - deGrom vs Hendricks, Mets W 5-2
Game 4 - Matz vs Hammel, Mets W 8-3
Game 3 - deGrom vs Hendricks, Mets W 5-2
Game 4 - Matz vs Hammel, Mets W 8-3
Mets Sweep series 4-0
Game 1
Mets hit .254 vs left handed pitchers this season with an OPS of .723
Cubs hit .246 vs right handed pitchers this season with an OPS of .728
Harvey - 7.2 IP, 4 hits, 2 ER, 2 BB, 9 SO, 64 of 97 pitches for strikes
Lester - 6.2 IP, 8 hits, 4 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO, 65 of 107 pitches for strikes
Mets would get 1 run in the 1st, 5th, 6th and 7th innings. Lester gave up 2 total HR's--both solo shots to Murphy and d'Arnaud.
Cubs would score 1 in the 5th and 1 in the 8th. Schwarber and Castro would tally an RBI each for Chicago.
6 Mets hitters would record a hit in the contest with d'Arnaud and Lagares each recording 2.
Game 2
Mets hit .234 vs right handed pitchers this season with an OPS of .709
Cubs hit .246 vs right handed pitchers this season with an OPS of .728
Syndergaard- 5.2 IP, 3 hits, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 SO 64 of 101 pitches for strikes
Arrieta - 5 IP, 4 hits, 4 ER, 2 BB, 8 SO, 52 of 94 pitches for strikes
Mets jump on Arrieta early thanks to a Wright RBI double and a Murphy 2 run HR in the first, add a run in the 3rd.
Cubs get 1 run in the 6th with a Bryant double off the wall.
The top of the Mets order led the way as the only 4 hitters to record a hit in the contest for NY would come from spots 1-4 in the lineup.
Only three batters would record multiple hits-- 2 Cubs (Bryant, Fowler) and Murphy for NY.
Both bullpens shut down the opponent-- Mets got 3.1 of scoreless baseball out of theirs while the Cubs pen tossed 3 scoreless (Mets did not bat in B9 since they were leading and home).
Game 3 Mets hit .234 vs right handed pitchers this season with an OPS of .709 Cubs hit .246 vs right handed pitchers this season with an OPS of .728 Hendricks - 4 IP, 5 hits, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO 43 of 67 pitches for strikes deGrom - 7 IP, 4 hits, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 SO, 66 of 100 pitches for strikes Conforto had the unluckiest-lucky game so far this postseason lining out hard to the right side twice, but reaching first on a strikeout (capping an 0-3 night) that allowed Cespedes to score the go ahead (game winning) run from third in the 6th. While the Mets were fortunate to continue the 6th on the Conforto strikeout; they ran into a bit of bad luck as a ball off the bat of Wilmer Flores flew past Soler in right, getting stuck in the outfield ivy at Wrigley. Problem is with two outs, Conforto was well on his way home when the umps signaled a ground rule double, sending him back to third. Terry Collins would choose not to pinch hit for deGrom in the 6th stranding both Flores on second and Conforto at third. The gamble would work out for the manager as the Mets would tack on two runs in the 7th while deGrom shut down the Cubs bats through the 7th. Top 4 would matter again in game 3 as the Mets 1-4 batters went 8-18 (even more impressive considering Granderson went 0-4 leading off) as the Cubs 1-4 batters went 3-15 against NY pitching. Murphy continued his hot streak recording a solo shot in the 3rd; although his other AB's included an infield single, a DP, a K and a lazy fly to left. Murphy has now homered in 5 straight games--his 6 total puts him as the Mets all time leader. 6 Mets would record hits with 3 of those hitters recording multi-hit games. (the multi hit games all belonged to the Mets 2-4 hitters) 5 Cubs would record a hit in game 3 however, no Cubs would have more than 1. Both Cubs runs came off of solo home runs by Schwarber and Soler. Daniel Murphy displayed excellent base running throughout the contest, reading a hard hit ball at Schwarber well enough to head from first to third. He would later score on a ground ball to first baseman Anthony Rizzo. Both Mets and Cubs pitchers recorded 9 strikeouts in the contest. Cubs Pitchers threw 150 pitches with 97 for strikes (65%) while Mets pitchers tallied 125 including 82 strikes (66%)
Game 4
Mets hit .234 vs right handed pitchers this season with an OPS of .709
Hammel - 1.1 IP, 4 hits, 5 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, 28 of 47 pitches for strikes
Matz - 4.2 IP, 4 hits, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO, 46 of 76 pitches for strikes
With the Mets already leading 6-0 as Chicago batted in the bottom of the fourth David Wright would snag a hard hit Starlin Castro line drive that all but ended the Cub's season. Unable to push a run across the plate to this point, Castro would rip a Matz offering with the bases loaded and no one out in the direction of Wright.
The Cubs would only manage to score one run following the Castro line out in the bottom of the fourth, failing to record the crooked number they were so desperately chasing throughout the series.
The Mets would jump on the board early as Duda hit a 3 run HR in the top of the first, followed by a d'Arnaud solo shot.
New York would add two more runs in both the top of the second and top of the 9th, however the 4 runs recorded in the opening frame would be enough to best the Cubs offense in Game 4.
Cubs hitters finished the series batting .164 (21/128) while Mets batters would finish the 4 game series batting .269 (35/130)
While Murphy continued his historic power streak in Game 4; the story of the series turned out to be the ability of Mets pitchers to not only shut down, but dominate Chicago hitters.
Chicago would hit 4 home runs in the 4 game NLCS; as Daniel Murphy would hit 4 on his own, with Mets batters totaling 7.
Harvey - 7.2 IP, 4 hits, 2 ER, 2 BB, 9 SO, 64 of 97 pitches for strikes
Lester - 6.2 IP, 8 hits, 4 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO, 65 of 107 pitches for strikes
