5 Shots (and1)

(1) Meek-less, The Board Meeting Continued

Without Kennedy Meeks UNC would still control the glass against Boston College. The Tar Heels would out-rebound BC 43-25, including 13-4 on the offensive end. JP Tokoto and Brice Johnson would lead the way for UNC with 9 boards apiece. Isaiah Hicks would do his work on the offensive glass, recording 4 of his 5 rebounds on that end. The 13 UNC offensive rebounds would lead to 19 second chance points for the Heels, a major contribution to their 18 point victory.

(2) Squad Goals

North Carolina would have eight players log double digit minutes in this one, impressive considering they were missing a starter in Kennedy Meeks and a key reserve in Theo Pinson. Brice Johnson would play 34 minutes, at times sliding over to center while Isaiah Hicks manned the 4, covering for the absence of Meeks. Nine Tar Heels would get on the scoreboard, with Paige, Johnson and Jackson reaching double figures.

(3) The Best Things in Life Are Free

Anyone who has followed UNC this season, and those of recent memory, knows free throw shooting hasn't been their forte. On the season the Tar Heels are shooting 69%, 161st in the country. UNC would make 75% from the line against Boston College, a percentage that would be top 20 in the nation if it was their rate for the year. While they shot a high percentage, the 12 made UNC free throws would be below their season average of 15.2.

(4) Hanlan In Check

Olivier Hanlan would finish with 18 for Boston College, only 1 point below his season average. Not that impressive until you consider he went for 30 on 10-20 shooting the last time these two teams met. In this ACC tournament matchup Hanlan would go just 5-19 from the field in 37 minutes, doing most of his damage from the free throw line. Aaron Brown would pace the BC offense with 20 points on 6-12 shooting, however no other player would reach double digits for the Eagles.

(5) Brice Brice Baby

If North Carolina is to advance deep into the ACC tournament they will need all of the good BJ showed today with none of the bad. When attacking the rim and hitting the offensive glass Brice can be a force few teams can contain. While his final stat line of 17 points on 8-17 shooting is rather impressive, Johnson can be forced into taking bad shots at times, something the Tar Heels can't afford against superior opponents. BJ will settle for quick jumpers, often a turnaround or fadeaway instead of looking to get to the rim against his defender. UNC won't be able to overcome these wasted possessions against the likes of Duke and Virginia.

  • Boston College shot 29% from 3 on 6-2
  • North Carolina would assist 19 of their 32 field goals
  • UNC would outscore BC 40-28 in the paint
  • BC wasted 37 possessions on the game, UNC wasted 29
